Linq to Entities vs. Linq to SQL vs. Entity Framework

ado.net entity-framework linq-to-entities linq-to-sql

Question

I've seen several articles on using a database in a WPF.Net 4 application. I believe the primary two technologies are:

  • SQL with Linq (L2S)
  • Enterprise Framework (EF)

I sometimes see mention of the Linq to Entities (L2E) technology, but I can never figure out what makes L2E different from EF.

So, my question is: Are there any differences between the technologies of Entity Framework and Linq to Entities? Or is this just another name for one technology?

Accepted Answer

Entity Framework allows for the development of queries in one of two ways:

L2E is a component of EF rather than a distinct technology.

For comparison, have a look at this article: http://thedatafarm.com/blog/data-access/choosing-linq-to-entities-vs-entity-sql-vs-entityclient/
