The method is not recognized by LINQ to Entities.

.net entity-framework linq linq-to-entities specification-pattern


When attempting to execute a linq query, I get the following error:

LINQ to Entities does not recognize the method 'Boolean IsCharityMatching(System.String, System.String)' method, and this method cannot be translated into a store expression.

If I understand this well, it's because LINQ to Entities needs the whole linq query expression to be converted to a server query, and as a result, you can't call an outside function in it. I've read a ton of other queries where people receive the same issue. I was hoping someone could put me in the correct way since I haven't been able to turn my situation into anything that works yet and my brain is about to malfunction. We use the specification pattern and Entity Framework, and I'm new to both.

The following code makes use of the specification:

ISpecification<Charity> specification = new CharitySearchSpecification(charityTitle, charityReference);

charities = charitiesRepository.Find(specification).OrderBy(p => p.RegisteredName).ToList();

The linq expression is as follows:

public System.Linq.Expressions.Expression<Func<Charity, bool>> IsSatisfied()
    return p => p.IsCharityMatching(this.charityName, this.charityReference);

The IsCharityMatching method is as follows:

Entity Framework can't really execute your C# code as part of its query, as you've already realized. It must be capable of transforming the query into a genuine SQL statement. You will need to reorganize your query expression into an expression that Entity Framework can handle in order for it to function.
